South Africa play Wales this weekend in the second game of their five match
tour following a narrow 23-21 success over Ireland in Dublin that surprised
many pundits given a lengthy injury list and the fact that the Springboks had
only flown into the country two days before the game.
That success has kept up the pressure on Australia in second position in the
IRB World Rankings and South Africa could move above them if they beat
Wales on Saturday and the Wallabies lose away to England.
Since the start of the new millennium South Africa have been the least
successful of the Tri-Nations sides when touring Europe at this time of year,
with 14 wins and 13 defeats. Their most successful tour was in 2008 when
they remained undefeated, beating Wales and Scotland before inflicting
England to their biggest ever defeat at Twickenham, winning 42-6.
The Springboks have now won 14 out of 17 matches played against northern
hemisphere opposition under Head Coach, PETER De VILLIERS. The three
defeats came against the British and Irish Lions in 2009 when South Africa
had already won the series and against France and Ireland on last year’s
European tour.
South Africa’s record against Wales is particularly impressive, having only
been beaten once in 24 matches, with 13 wins out of 15 on Welsh soil.
Wales’ solitary success over the Springboks came in June 1999, when they
won 29-19 in Cardiff and since that defeat South Africa have won the last 11
meetings between the two sides.
Wales lost 25-16 to Australia last weekend in a match that marked MARTYN
WILLIAMS 100th test appearance and have now only won two of their last
eight test matches, against Scotland and Italy in this year’s Six Nations
Championship.
Wales are currently in ninth position in the IRB World Rankings and
have climbed one place since WARREN GATLAND became Head Coach
in November 2007, winning 16 out of 30 test matches played under his
leadership, a success rate of 53%. This compares with 18 wins, two draws
and 20 defeats (45% success) from November 2004 up to the date of his
appointment. Wales have only won one out of 10 matches played against
Tri-Nations opponents under Gatland, beating Australia 21-18 at the
Millennium Stadium in November 2008.
If Wales win on Saturday they could climb to eighth place in the rankings
above Argentina if the Pumas lose away to Italy. The Welsh will have to be
careful not to concede too many penalties in kickable positions if they are to
have any chance of beating South Africa, who have this year’s leading points
scorer in the Tri-Nations in fly half MORNE STEYN, who amassed 77 points
during that tournament despite the Springboks winning only one game as
they finished bottom. Steyn missed his first kick at goal in 42 attempts during
the win over Ireland last weekend and is averaging over 14 points per test
match in 2010.
