Fiji begin their three match tour of Europe with a visit to Nantes to play
France on Saturday evening before moving on to Wales and Italy later this
month.
The two sides have met on seven occasions in test matches, including four
at Rugby World Cup finals, with France winning each time having scored an
average of over 40 points per game.
This is only the third time Fiji have played on tour in France and on the most
recent encounter they lost 77-10 in November 2001. On their last European
tour in 2009, Fiji lost to Ireland and Scotland before finishing the tour with a
29-18 win over Romania in Bucharest.
France have played six test matches at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes,
winning four and losing two. Their last game at this venue was a 50-6
victory over Canada in November 2005 and the two defeats came against
New Zealand in 1990 and Argentina in 1992.
This is the second time that Fiji will have played in Nantes, having beaten
Wales 38-34 in the 2007 Rugby World Cup with 18 points by Nicky Little,
their all time record points scorer.
France are currently fourth in the IRB World Rankings, which is the highest
of all northern hemisphere teams. They cannot catch third placed South
Africa this week but a defeat to Fiji could see them drop three places if
England and Scotland avoid defeat against Australia and New Zealand
respectively and Ireland beat Samoa.
Fiji are 10th in the rankings but no combination of results would see them
move above Wales in the table. If Fiji lose to France and Samoa avoid defeat
in Ireland, the Fijians would drop one place to 11th.
France have won 16 out of 28 matches played under Head Coach, MARC
LIEVREMONT, who led ‘Les Bleus’ to the Grand Slam in this year’s Six Nations
Championship. Since that achievement France have lost their two most
recent matches on tour to South Africa and Argentina in June.
Fiji have won three and lost four under team manager SAM DOMONI and
most recently finished second at the ANZ Pacific Nations Cup in June
2010 after wins over Japan and Tonga before losing 31-9 to Samoa in the
deciding match.
Potential milestones
France need to score 15 points on Saturday to reach 300 points in eight
matches against Fiji.
DMITRI YACHVILI is currently the sixth highest points scorer in test history
for France with 264 and needs four points to move up to fourth on the list
ahead of both Gerald Merceron (267) and Jean-Pierre Romeu (265).
The man in the middle
ANDREW SMALL of England takes charge of this match on Saturday, his first
involving either France or Fiji. His most recent appointments were in Italy’s
two match tour of South Africa in June 2010.
