Argentina begin their three match tour of Europe with a visit to Verona to take
on Italy this weekend before playing games against France and Ireland later this
month. The Italians will also play three matches in November, with Australia and
Fiji also visiting the Azzurri.
The last time the two sides met was in November 2008 when Argentina won
22-14 in Turin. That was the Pumas seventh win in the last nine games against
Italy and they will be hoping to extend that sequence to get their tour off to a
winning start on Saturday.
Italy have played seven matches in 2010 and their only victory was a 16-12 win
over Scotland in the Six Nations in February in Rome. They finished bottom of
the tournament for the third consecutive season, having only won two matches
over that period.
Italy’s last win over the Pumas on home soil was in November 1998 when they
won 23-19 in Piacenza, although they have since won twice in Argentina, with
both wins by a single point margin in Cordoba in 2005 and 2008.
Argentina have won four and lost four of their eight matches played in 2010,
beating France 41-13 in Buenos Aires on their most recent outing in June, with
two tries by FELIPE CONTEPOMI. They have won at least one test match on their
November tours every year since 2000, when they lost to England in the only
test played on that tour.
A win for Italy would move them up a place to 11th in the IRB World Rankings if
Samoa lose away to Ireland and they would climb up to 10th place if they won
by a margin of more than 15 points and both Samoa and Fiji, who play away
to France, lose this weekend. They would have to create a record to achieve
this, with the biggest win over Argentina coming in their first ever meeting in
October 1978, Italy winning 19-6 on that occasion.
A win for Argentina would see them move up to seventh in the rankings if
Scotland lose at home to New Zealand but they could also drop a place if they
fail to beat Italy and Wales win against South Africa.
Argentina have won five and lost 10 under Head Coach SANTIAGO PHELAN, a
success rate of 33%. This compares with 48 wins and 24 defeats (67% success)
this century before he took over in March 2008 and they have dropped two
places in the IRB World Rankings since then.
Italy have won four and lost 24 under Head Coach NICK MALLETT since he took
over in October 2007, dropping one place in the IRB World Rankings during his
period in charge. Prior to his appointment Italy had won 28, drawn one and lost
61 since the start of the new millennium, a 31% success rate compared to 14%
under Mallett, whose four wins have been against Scotland (twice), Samoa and
Argentina.
