New Zealand travel north on the second leg of their four match tour of the
UK and Ireland with a visit to Murrayfield to take on Scotland following last
weekend’s 26-16 win over England in a match that saw DAN CARTER become
only the fourth player in test match history to kick 200 penalty goals.
The All Blacks are still over five points clear of Australia at the top of the IRB
World Rankings, whilst Scotland, who currently lie in seventh place, would
move up to fifth if they win on Saturday combined with England losing at
home to Australia and Ireland failing to beat Samoa. If Scotland lose to New
Zealand and Argentina win in Italy, the Pumas would move above Scotland
into seventh place.
New Zealand have never lost to Scotland in test match internationals in 27
games played between the two countries. The nearest Scotland have come to
achieving a victory over the All Blacks was in 1983 when Peter Dods narrowly
missed a touchline conversion to win a match that finished tied at 25 points
apiece. The only other time Scotland have avoided defeat against New
Zealand was in 1963 when the two sides played out a 0-0 draw, which was
the last international match played without a single point being scored.
New Zealand’s last defeat in a tour match in Europe during November came
in 2002 at Twickenham, when England won 31-28. Since that defeat and a
20-20 draw against France the following week, the All Blacks have won the
last 21 internationals played in Europe on their November tours, including
two victories over Scotland in 2005 and 2008 when they scored 61 points and
conceded just 16.
The All Blacks have now won 41 out of 43 matches played against northern
hemisphere opposition under Head Coach, GRAHAM HENRY, with the only
two defeats coming against France in the 2007 Rugby World Cup quarter
finals in Cardiff and in Dunedin in June 2009.
Scotland have won five, drawn one and lost four under Head Coach ANDY
ROBINSON and come into this match on the back of three consecutive away
victories over Ireland and Argentina, who they beat twice on tour in June.
Since Robinson took charge in June 2009 Scotland have moved up two
places in the IRB World Rankings and climbed three places on the back of
those consecutive away wins.
This will be Scotland’s first test match since their tour to Argentina, with
further internationals against South Africa and Samoa to follow later this
month at Murrayfield.
Potential milestones
The All Blacks need 12 points to become the first country to score 12,000 in
international test match rugby.
Scotland need to score nine points to reach 300 in test matches against New
Zealand, whilst the All Blacks require 24 points to reach 800 against the Scots.
DAN CARTER is closing in on Jonny Wilkinson’s record as the all time leading
points scorer in test match rugby. He is now on 1,143 points, which is just 35
behind Wilkinson.
Carter also needs three more conversions to become the first player to reach
200 in test matches.
RICHIE McCAW and MILS MULIAINA will both equal Sean Fitzpatrick’s record
of 92 test match caps for the All Blacks if they play this weekend.
McCaw will also equal John Eales of Australia in fifth place for the most
appearances as a captain if he leads out his team against Scotland on
Saturday.
New Zealand have scored at least one try in their last 81 internationals, a run
going back to August 2004 when they lost 23-18 to Australia with six penalty
goals kicked.
