RIVELINO Best Speciall Left Foot

NEWS BY FIFA,COM

As absured as it no doubt sounds to Corinthians fans, the uniquely gifted Roberto Rivelino has always been a diehard supporter of arch Sao Paulo rivals Palmeiras, a devotion he shared with the rest of his family.

A futsal player in his formative years, it was as a 16-year-old that Rivelino would first come to prominence. Appearing for Banespa against his beloved Palmeiras in a Sao Paulo state juniors final in 1962, he turned on such a stylish display that a member of the Verdão board called him to offer him a trial.

Rivelino accepted and completed a couple of training sessions before it all turned sour. Turning up for a third time, he was standing with a group of other young hopefuls when coach Mario Travaglini approached them. “Listen lads, you can get changed if you want,” said Travaglini, “but I’m not sure you’re going to be doing any training.”

Convinced of his abilities, particularly with his exceptional left foot, Rivelino angrily declined the offer and stormed out, never to return. Within a few short months he had joined the youth set-up at Corinthians.

One club’s loss became another’s gain. Standing head and shoulders above his fellow young pretenders, the temperamental teenager was a unique talent that required careful nurturing. Recognising this, Corinthians granted Rivelino the opportunity he had been looking for, an opportunity he would seize to become quite possibly the greatest player ever to pull on the Timão jersey.

“Corinthians welcomed me with open arms and gave me the chance to achieve everything I achieved in life,” he would later comment. “It was a second home for me.”

Reaching the pinnacle
The greatest of those achievements would come in the yellow and green of Brazil, most notably at the 1970 FIFA World Cup Mexico™. Prior to that, however, Rivelino had to serve his apprenticeship, and after breaking into national side in 1965, he would have to wait another three years before becoming a familiar face in the squad.

The reason for that was Brazil’s embarrassment of attacking riches at the time. Despite his burgeoning reputation as one of the most accomplished players in the land, the up-and-coming No10 found his path to regular international football blocked by the likes of Tostao, Jairzinho and the peerless Pele.

It was only when Mario Zagallo came in replace Joao Saldanha as Brazil coach just months before Mexico 1970 got under way that Rivelino’s became an integral part of the side. Changing the formation, Zagallo found a niche for the Corinthians star on the left side of attack, where, sporting the No11 jersey, he linked up to perfection with his no-less talented team-mates.

Fortunately they only face average defender and has a tandem who had scored in the first match Berbatov could really help him out of this situation.

Let see in midfield, I think it is the right time for Ferguson to tandem Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher in central midfield. Antonio Valencia should begin on the right. The International Ecuadorian was out of form at Fulham.

In the back with Rio Ferdinand still out, Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans between full backs John O’Shea and Patrice Evra still the unchanged formation for United.

Avram Grant men are in unstable mood after heavy defeat last week. The Jews will be all too aware of the negative impact and the boost that West Ham would get from coming away with anything from Old Trafford. Defence issue could be influence the moral team.

MARCOUSSIS, France — French sporting icon Sebastien Chabal gets what could be his last chance to prove he is an international No8 on Saturday against Argentina and he is determined to seize it with both hands.

The 32-year-old affectionately known as the 'Caveman' will make his 57th test appearance but only ninth in the position - his first since the summer of 2007 - which he has made his own at club level first for English side Sale and then at Racing-Metro.

Chabal, who replaces Imanol Harinordoquy in the position after the latter disappointed in the win over Fiji last Saturday, said that there was no question it was his preferred position.

"No8 is the post that I prefer," said Chabal, who filled that role for Sale from 2004-09 and at Racing-Metro since he joined them.

"It gives me more freedom on the pitch, more latitude in the attacking phases notably with the amount of space, the extra time I have to attack."

Chabal, who became a cult hero and sparked 'Chabalmania' when playing as No8 he produced two earth shattering tackles in successive tests in New Zealand on Ali Williams and Chris Masoe, said that thanks to former France and Italy coach Pierre Berbizier, his manager at Racing-Metro, he had evolved as a player.

"It is the vision that Pierre (Berbizier) has given me of the game that I am able to put into practice, with and for my team-mates, which gives the impression that I am more motivated," said Chabal, who will face a stiff test against an always formidable Pumas pack.

"It is true that before I was a bit one dimensional: take the ball and attack the line.

"These days, Pierre has asked me to look for options, to pass the ball, to act as a decoy rather than systematically doing the same thing. By creating uncertainty, my range is enriched," added Chabal.

Chabal, whose caveman nickname evolves from his long hair and unkempt beard, is not bitter that he has been reduced to sparing appearances at No8 at international level and mainly played in the engine room of the second row largely alongside Racing-Metro team-mate and former national captain Lionel Nallet.

"There is no sense of regret because playing in the second row has allowed me to stay in the squad," he said.

"And that, is very important for my confidence, continuity and to get to the World Cup."

Chabal still has much to prove he can play at this exalted level in the position to head coach Marc Lievremont - who criticised his performance after he replaced Harinordoquy in the second-half of the Fiji match.

However, scrum coach Didier Retiere reiterated that Lievremont hadn't lost faith in him finally replicating his club form in the national strip and he had been told before the summer tour of South Africa and Argentina - which he ended up missing - that he could be deployed in the No8 role.

"The fact he (Chabal) changed club, from Sale to Racing, has perhaps provoked him to prepare for matches a little differently," said Retiere.

"He is making the most of his qualities (...) he has enlarged his workrate and the continuity of his game.

"He has gone from being an 'impact player' to one who can play 80 minutes for his club."

Ireland v New Zealand: Richie McCaw insists he has 'moved on' from Jamie Heaslip bust-up

New Zealand captain Richie McCaw insists that Jamie Heaslip's dismissal after 15 minutes for kneeing him in the back when the All Blacks last met Ireland, in New Plymouth earlier this year, is water under the bridge as the two sides prepare to go head to head again at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

Those things sometimes happen on the field so you just move on," says McCaw who is poised to break Sean Fitzpatrick's All Blacks record of 92 caps when he takes the field on Saturday.

"I don't get carried away and I definitely don't carry grudges. I can put that stuff away and get on with the game. I haven't seen the tape, but he probably wishes he didn't do it, he ended up off the field.

McCaw also re-iterated that New Zealand were not reading too much into the size of victroy last time out when they thumped 14 man Ireland 66-28.

Namibia will prepare for their World Cup 2011 qualifiers against Tunisia by facing Portugal at the Estádio Universitário in Lisbon on November 7.

November will also witness the first ever visit of an Argentinean team to Georgia, when to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Georgia Rugby Union when the Jaguars face the Lelos in Tbilisi on November 13.

Other stand out fixtures include Fiji's visit to Bucharest to mark the 75th anniversary of the Romanian Rugby Federation, while Russia will also tour Canada for the first time, providing intriguing contests between Unions with serious ambitions of moving up the IRB world rankings.

Tonga, who will play New Zealand in the opening match of Rugby World Cup 2011, face tough matches against Ireland A and Scotland A before travelling to Portugal to take on the European Nations Cup high-flyers on November 28.

"This is an unprecedented and exciting November schedule of matches which we intend to replicate on an annual basis as a part of our HP investment strategy. The IRB is providing significant funding towards the flights and accommodation costs of the overall programme and we would like to recognise the financial contribution of the SRU, FIR and IRFU in supporting the games which they are hosting," said IRB Head of Development and Performance Mark Egan.

"The IRB continues to invest over £5.5million annually via a portfolio of Regional tournaments such as the European Nations Cup and strategic investment tournaments, including the Pacific Nations Cup, IRB Nations Cup and the Americas Rugby Championship. These tournaments play an essential role in each Union's player development pathway with the ultimate objective of improving competitiveness across all our Strategic Investment Programme Unions.

"However, it is essential that all our High Performance Unions have between seven and 10 Test match level games each year in order to benchmark player and coach development programmes, challenge for IRB World Ranking points and provide a competition environment in which Unions can prepare for World Cup 2011 in New Zealand.

"The programme also provides for an exciting opportunity for the recently formed Argentina Jaguars to embark on their inaugural tour of Europe following investment from the IRB in the UAR's domestic High Performance structures," added Egan.

Saturday’s test match will be the 21st Test between Scotland and South Africa. South Africa have won 16 tests and lost 4. The first Test was played in 1906 in Glasgow and was won by Scotland while the other three victories by Scotland were all achieved at Murrayfield.

The Springbok’s biggest defeat against Scotland came in 2002 when Corné Krige’s team lost 21-6. All three Tests on that tour (against France, Scotland and England) were lost by the Springboks. Since then South Africa has a record seven consecutive wins against Scotland.

South Africa’s overall record against Scotland – Played 20; Won 16; Lost 4; Points for 501; Points against 216; Tries for 65; Tries against 24; Average score 25-11.

South Africa’s record against Scotland at this venue - Played 13; Won 10; Lost 3; Points for 345; Points against 125; Tries for 49; Tries against 13; Average score 27-10.

MILESTONES

Jean de Villiers will become the most capped Springbok centre with 52 caps.

Victor Matfield will become the most capped Springbok in tests against Scotland with his 8th appearance.

RECORD WATCH

Morné Steyn needs one penalty goal to equal Braam van Straaten’s record of 34 penalty goals in a season of International rugby. He also needs just one point to get to 300 points in tests. Should he get this one point he would have scored his 300 points in his 24th test. The fastest to 300 points in tests by a Springbok.

CJ van der Linde needs one try to join three other Springboks (Chris Koch, Os du Randt and Gurthrö Steenkamp) as the top try scorer for a prop in tests.

Bismarck du Plessis needs one try to become the sole record holder for most tries in tests by a hooker. He is currently level with James Dalton on 5 career tries.

LONDON (AFP) - Manager Martin Johnson on Wednesday made four changes to his starting lineup in naming the side to take on Samoa in an international Test match at Twickenham on Saturday.

He also named Nick Easter of Harlequins as his captain taking over from Lewis Moody who was skipper for the thrilling 35-18 win over Australia last Saturday.

Leeds openside flanker Hendre Fourie gets his first Test start in place of Moody, who has been given a week's rest.

Matt Banahan, who won his previous five caps on the wing, has been preferred to Delon Armitage as Mike Tindall's outside centre replacement.

Blindside flanker James Haskell, who has not featured yet this autumn, and tight-head prop David Wilson will both start, with Tom Croft and Dan Cole moved to the bench for England's first meeting with Samoa since the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

Otherwise, Johnson has retained the core of the team that downed Australia at Twickenham a week after narrowly losing to New Zealand.

Easter has previously captained England in non-cap internationals against the Barbarians in 2008 and at the end of last season, but he has never led his country into a Test match.

Johnson said he had been delighted with the performance against Australia but warned that Samoa were dangerous opponents who could not be under-estimated.

"The good thing is that we played well in the last game and have done okay in the game before that (26-16 defeat by New Zealand)," he said.

"The team is doing well, but we want to keep the continuity and we've seen the rewards of that. We don't want to break it up too much.

"The performance (against Australia) didn't come out of the clouds, it was a build-up of what we've been doing for a while.

"We had a good day, we could have scored more tries and they could have scored more tries. But it's nice as a coach not to be talking about 'if onlys' after a game."

Australia will play their first Test match ever in the Tuscan city at football club Fiorentina's home ground, the 47,000-capacity Stadio Artemio Franchi, on Sunday (EDT).

The Wallabies have left the wind, rain and cold of the UK and Ireland behind for conditions which should be more conducive to their expansive game.

They'll also be looking to expand their minds in the narrow, cobble-stoned streets which are home to some of the world's great art galleries containing works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

"It's a shame we're only having three or four days here," prop Ben Alexander said.

"We would love to have a look around.

"I've been to Italy a few times but have never been to Florence, the Duomo (cathedral) and all the Renaissance stuff."

Coach Robbie Deans is looking for his own Renaissance after two straight losses to England and Munster.

Deans, who signalled all spots were up for grabs following last weekend's crushing Test loss at Twickenham, will name his team on Friday morning (EDT).

Italy name their side earlier in the day, minus injured former NRL star Craig Gower.

Alexander, a Penrith Panthers supporter, said the Wallabies were disappointed the former Kangaroo won't be there.

"That 2003 grand final (when Penrith beat the Sydney Roosters), I remember where I was when I was watching that," he said.

"It will be disappointing if Craig's out."

This weekend's clash marks the first meeting between Wales and Fiji since the South Sea Islanders humbled the men in red in their final pool fixture at the 2007 World Cup, dumping them out of the competition.

The embarrassing 38-34 defeat at Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes spelt the end of Gareth Jenkins' tenure as national coach and paved the way for Warren Gatland to succeed him.

While Wales have unquestionably progressed under the New Zealander the home side are entering the contest on the back of five straight defeats, and they have opened their November campaign with losses to Australia and South Africa.

And while Fiji have never won in Cardiff their last visit, in 2005, saw Wales scrape home 11-10 thanks to a late Nicky Robinson drop goal.

The tourists arrive in Cardiff on the back of a 34-12 reverse at the hands of France.

Despite the comprehensive scoreline the visitors were actually ahead at the end of the first quarter and Domoni, who today made eight changes to his starting line-up for Friday's match, believes his side are more than capable of causing another huge upset.

"We have a squad we can mix and match and our chances are good, compared to our lack of preparation time for last week's game," he said.

"The boys have had more time around each other and more time to gel. We have a good backline and a good pack of forwards and we are backing ourselves and playing for each other, it should be a cracker of a game."

Wales have adapted very different approaches for their two autumn appointments to date. Looking to be direct around the ruck area against the Wallabies, but putting more tempo into their game against South Africa.

Gatland's men may be well advised to steer clear of the loose style of play that cost them so dearly in 2007, and look to take on the Fijian pack, but Domoni is not concerned over what tactics Wales will use.

"Our preparations focus on ourselves," he said.

"We are not worrying about anyone else. We are controlling our mental approach and focusing on how we will attack them.

"It's a well balanced squad and the guys that we have down on paper have our backing and our faith that they can do a good job on Friday."

Among the eight changes made by Domoni are the inclusion of Exeter full-back Josh Matavesi and Saracens wing Michael Tagicakibau, while Gloucester flanker Akapusi Qera drops to the bench.

The matchday 22 includes six players involved in the 2007 meeting and there could have been as many as eight had former Leicester centre Seru Rabeni and Sale lock Wame Lewaravu not been delayed in travelling from France by visa issues.

Tagicakibau, the younger brother of Samoa and London Irish back Sailosi, and fellow flyer Vereniki Goneva face up to a powerful Wales wing combination in the form of 18-year-old George North, who grabbed two tries in an impressive debut against South Africa, and Aled Brew.

And the 25-year-old is looking forward to the challenge, and his first opportunity to play at the Millennium Stadium.

"I have heard a bit about them," he said. "But, to be honest, I have not seen a great deal of them but I am looking forward to the challenge and the chance to show what I can do and hopefully it will be a good game.

The sack of Carlos Queiroz – which was preceded by Portugal's unimpressive showing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup – put an end to the national team's frustrating run which begun to build itself after the departure of the retired Luis Figo. In the early moments of this embarrassing period for the former European Championship runners-up, Captain Cristiano Ronaldo was key to Portugal's acceptable results as ex-boss Luiz Felipe Scolari managed to compensate Figo's loss through different tactics.

The Selecção weren't displaying the best football that any fan could dream of, but they did just enough to reach Euro 2008 with Cristiano Ronaldo emerging as the team's top scorer in the qualifiers. But just as the star winger was expected to power Portugal to more success ahead of the competition in Switzerland and Austria, his fitness suffered a setback.

It eventually blew the Selecção's chances of going one better than they had done four years back in their own country; Portugal couldn't stand Germany's forces in the quarter-finals of the tournament. They crashed out at the expense of Joachim Lowe's men who subsequently lost to Spain in the final whereas Captain Cristiano Ronaldo had to go through an ankle operation under the advice of doctors.

Following his return to the Portuguese national team, the former Manchester United play maker needed time to adjust and adapt to the tactics of Luiz Felipe Scolari's successor, Carlos Queiroz. In fact, it seemed like Cristiano Ronaldo never found himself on the pitch for the Selec̤̣o anymore: his influential performances and goals had been substituted by poor shows, petulant body language and a two-year goal drought Рmuch to the anxiety and annoyance of Portugal's supporters.

The country's national football team couldn't hide its problems from the public as Portugal's 1-0 defeat to Spain in South Africa revealed Carlos Queiroz's lack of control over his players. Time was running fast down the clock for the ex-Manchester United assistant who later got replaced by Paulo Bento following Portugal's alarming start to the Euro 2012 qualification campaign.

England are short on top quality strikers. Wayne Rooney is still nursing an ankle injury. Jermain Defoe and Bobby Zamora are long term absentee’s this season, and with Darren Bent missing for a few weeks as well, the main England strike force has been depleted. Who does it leave? Pretty much Peter Crouch in the squad as a senior striker with experience. So, with Capello having to dip down into England’s second tier to find quality to fill out the squad, where really does that leave the future of England’s strikers? England don’t play competitively until March when they face Wales in a Euro 2012 qualifier in Cardiff, so they should be at fuller strength there. While Agbonlahor, Bothroyd and Carroll make interesting propositions for England’s future, they are of course relatively untested at full international level. Newcastle’s Carroll has been knocking on the door of the England squad, after hitting seven goals in the Premier League this year, and currently being the league’s top scorer along with team mate Kevin Nolan. The likelihood is that the big striker will actually start against France in the friendly, as Agbonlahor is still working his way back to full fitness. Sunderland’s Henderson has been impressive for the Black Cats, and is part of the reason why they have taken a much better step towards consistency. A product of the Under 21 side, his name has been touted around as being a great prospect for the future in the England midfield. He could deservedly make his debut.

There is actually an exciting look about England to some degree, particularly in the midfield. While Frank Lampard is still out injured, the attacking threats from Manchester City’s Adam Johnson and James Milner, along with Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere, accompanied by Aston Villa’s Ashley Young looking quite promising and hints at a good future in that department. As for the England defence that will be on show for the England v France match, there is a little uncertainty. For a match which has no meaning, Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti and Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson may be hoping that Capello leaves Ashley Cole, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand on the bench. It is quite a senior looking back line, but the surprise call up of United’s Chris Smalling, who hasn’t really made any impact at Old Trafford since his move in the summer, could hint at Capello experimenting there too. With Micah Richards, Kieran Gibbs and Joleon Lescott in the defensive corps, it could be a different looking England defence as well, perhaps even just for the second half. Capello may even take a look at Blackburn’s Jones in the back line at some point, as his rise and rise continues to unexpected levels. But up front is the area which will come under the most scrutiny of all. This is a good chance for Capello to really see what options he has beneath the established names. England need to know that they can call on depth up front when the main few fall out of form, or fall foul of injury like they have done. With nothing but pride on the line in the match against France, it makes the perfect opportunity to blood some fledglings.

Romania are preparing for the Euro 2012 qualifiers that start in September and have been playing friendly internationals for the past few days. They first played Ukraine last week and lost 3-2 and on Wednesday were rocked 1-0 by modest Macedonia in Bischofshofen.

The Tricolours round off their friendly internationals with a match against World Cup finalists Honduras on Saturday and they will certainly want to end the sequence of three matches with a flourish. Romania couldn't qualify for the World Cup and are next schedule to play an international match against Turkey in August, so coach Razvan Lucescu will be using the Saturday fixture to get a closer look at his side.

Honduras have been in terribly awkward form in the build-up to the World Cup finals and have looked unimpressive in their last two international friendlies. Crucially, they have played against teams who will not participate in the showpiece event in South Africa - Belarus and Azerbaijan - and have looked severely under par, failing to win either game.

On Wednesday against Azerbaijan, los Catrachos failed to score as the friendly international between the two sides at the Stadion Zell am See against Austria ended in a goalless draw. It was a very lacklustre performance from the Hondurans and coach Reinaldo Rueda will be expecting something better against Romania on Saturday.

Coach Razvan Lucescu has tried different personnel in the last two matches and he is likely to chop out and draft in new faces on Saturday too. Dorin Goian should start against Honduras in defence and so should Tiberiu Ghioane and Daniel Niculae in midfield and attack respectively.

Another interesting international friendly game, between Sweden and Germany.

Sweden so far is 3rd in the Euro 2012 qualifications with 3 games and 6 points, while Netherlands are 1st with 4 games and 12 points, and Hungary is 2nd with 4 games and 9 points.

Sweden took over San Marino and Hungary at home, with 6:0 and 2:0, but lost away in Holland with 1:4. Coach Erik Hamren has announced his squad already, which includes Milan’s star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as well as players from the local Eredivisie, Andreas Isaksson, Ola Toivonen and Marcus Berg from PSV, Rasmus Elm and Pontus Wernbloom from AZ Alkmaar, Andreas Granqvist from Groningen.

Meanwhile Germany’s manager Joachim Loew has left your few key players, Real Madrid’s midfielder Mesut Oezil, captain Philipp Lahm and Thomas Mueller from Bayern Munich. Striker Miroslav Klose and defender Holger Badstuber will also miss this friendly but due to injuries.

Germany are unbeaten in their group for Euro 2012, which show that the team is in a great shape, but the squad will get out on the field for this friendly will not be the starter one. Midfielder Mario Goetze and defender Marcel Schmelzer from Borussia Dortmund, midfielders Andre Schuerrle and Lewis Holtby from Mainz, defender Mats Hummels and midfielder Kevin Grosskreutz from Borussia Dortmund were all included in the team that will visit Sweden.

Loew said the following “The match in Sweden is a good opportunity to give a chance to some players who are still developing,” Loew said. “They have recommended themselves by playing constantly well in the Bundesliga and are likely to move up to the international level in the near future. We expect that some of them will make their debut in Goteborg.”

I think that Sweden has been given an opportunity to meet the German team in its weaker form, and they might as well take a full advantage of it. The great shape of Ibrahimovic might lead to something good and Sweden can come out as a winner in this game.

The Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk has received some disappointing news on the injury front in the build-up to the international friendly against Turkey on Wednesday evening in the Amsterdam ArenA.

The Dutch gaffer will have to make do without the services of Stuttgart defender Khalid Boulahrouz and Ajax duo Urby Emanuelson and Demy de Zeeuw when Oranje take on the Turks on Wednesday.

Boulahrouz came off the bench at half-time in Stuttgart's 3-3 draw against Kaiserslautern at the weekend, but was forced to leave the pitch again only 20 minutes later due to a thigh injury.

De Zeeuw has been plagued by various injury problems ever since the 2010 World Cup and picked up a back injury in Ajax's 2-0 away loss against AZ on Sunday. Emanuelson sustained a leg injury in the same match and was replaced at the hour mark due to the knock.

Van Marwijk has made it clear that he won't call up any replacements for the friendly game against Guus Hiddink's Turkey.

Though their World Cup ended with a heart-wrenching extra time loss to Ghana in the Round of 16, the USA’s 2010 cycle truly comes to a close on Tuesday in New Jersey. The Americans will take on Brazil in their first match wince leaving South Africa, a game which has a lame duck feel to it for the home side.

New Brazil manager Mano Menezes has called in a young, exciting roster, the future of the Selecao, looking ahead to the next four years and a World Cup on home soil; Bob Bradley has called in many of the usual suspects, players he relied heavily on in June.

Bradley’s status moving forward is still uncertain, giving the game even less import than friendlies like this usually possess. From an American perspective, the game looks like nothing but a money grab; with only a few players in the squad who were not in South Africa, Bradley and US Soccer apparently have no interest in following the same path as Mendes.

Those Americans let off of duty are either looking for new clubs (Jay DeMerit) or are better served staying with their clubs for other reasons (Clint Dempsey, Oguchi Onyewu).

Neither Charlie Davies, who seemed a possibility but is yet to return to full fitness, nor Jermaine Jones, who was originally called but withdrew due to his own recovery efforts at Schalke, will appear. Davies might have given the game a bit of juice in a feel-good way, and Jones has long been the source of American frustration after declaring his desire to play for the US before an injury kept him out for over a year. Same old same old would be easier swallowed with either or both in the squad.

There are a few next-wave names on the rosters who might get a chance to impress. Sacha Kljestan recently moved to Anderlecht from Chivas USA of Major League Soccer, and brings a creative spark in central midfielder. On the wing, Alejandro Bedoya of Örebro in Sweden, a player who just missed out on South Africa, is an exciting player full of promise.

Criticism of Bradley’s roster is easy, though circumstances make it somewhat understandable. There is essentially no time to train, and the American talent pool is not stocked with established players of a younger generation as is Brazil’s. Neymar, Pato, and the other exciting players at Menezes disposal are light years beyond anything the US has; excuses aside, friendlies later in the year will provide whomever is coaching the Yanks a chance to bring in new names.

This match is instead treated as a chance to honor the bulk of American World Cup group, a public thank you for a solid four year cycle and a uplifting (if ultimately disappointing) performance in South Africa.

Experience should help the Americans deal with the deficit of skill they’ll face against this Brazil side. Expectations are that Menezes will move the Samba Kings back towards jugo bonito after the Dunga regime stifled creativity in deference to better defending and organization; what that means for Tuesday is hard to know, but Brazil looks prepared to put on a show.

On Wednesday, November 17, 2010, football supporters worldwide will be watching the international friendly between Brazil and Argentina. For South Americans, there is no bigger matchup. Since 1993, Brazil has had the upper hand for the most part: two World Cup titles, four Copa America victories, and three Confederation's Cup trophies are among the list of accolades Brazil has won over the past 17 years. This is not to say Argentina has been weak during this time, but for many of these tournaments, Argentina fell victim to Brazil in three of those tournaments, at the finals.

For the past two World Cups, both teams have gotten as far as the quarterfinals. In similar fashion, both teams replaced head coaches after the World Cup, but the strategies employed by both teams diverge tremendously, and it is reflected in the most recent selections for this upcoming friendly.

BRAZIL

Current Head Coach, Mano Menezes has essentially taken a different path than what prior coach Dunga had done with the Seleção. While Dunga relied on many veterans and fielded an older, counter-attacking team, Menezes has been putting together sides that have many players in their early 20s, some even in their teens. While the results have been favorable thus far, the first real test will be when Menezes' boys face an Argentinian side that is strictly focused on the 2011 Copa America. Recent lineups have included Ramires, Nilmar, Robinho and Dani Alves as "veterans." The rest of the team include players that Menezes has coached from prior stints at Gremio and Corinthians and several other young rising stars that may not be ready for the Copa America relative to other players, but will have significant experience by the time the 2014 World Cup arrives.

ARGENTINA

Where to even begin with Argentina? The last trophy Argentina has won was the 1993 Copa America (Olympics do not count). Over the years, one could make the argument Argentina puts together one of the most entertaining sides to watch - unfortunately most entertaining does not always mean title-winning. Just as an example, the 2007 Copa America was expected to be won by Argentina. Brazil fielded a B-team and the Argentines had Juan Roman Riquelme who arguably was the best player in the world during 2007. Argentina steam rolls into the finals only to be upset by Brazil 3-0. With the upcoming Copa America in their backyard next summer, there is no margin for error, so Argentina will look to bring experienced players who have been around the block.

Manny Pacquiao Won the World Boxing Council super welterweight Title

News By Yahoo

ARLINGTON, Texas – Manny Pacquiao was once again masterful, beating Antonio Margarito so frightfully that Margarito’s face looked as it had been pounded repeatedly by a club.

Pacquiao won a unanimous one-sided decision in a blowout from the opening seconds of the fight to capture the World Boxing Council super welterweight title before 41,734 in-awe fans at Cowboys Stadium.

Pacquiao’s title belt, coming against an opponent who had a 17-pound weight advantage when the bell rang, 165-148, was the eighth in his illustrious career. Pacquiao has won world titles at 112, 122, 126, 130, 135, 140, 147 and now 154 pounds.

Judges Jurgen Langos had it 120-109, Glen Crocker had it 118-110 and Oren Schellenberger had it 119-109 for Pacquiao. Yahoo! Sports scored it 120-107 for Pacquiao, giving Pacquiao a 10-8 edge in the 10th round when he dominated tremendously.

Margarito, fighting for the first time in the U.S. since Jan. 24, 2009, when he was caught with an illegal knuckle pad in his gloves before a loss to Shane Mosley, was never in the fight. Pacquiao’s speed was blinding and was the difference in the fight.

Pacquiao was hurt when Margarito landed a combination to the ribs, but he spun off the ropes and landed a three-punch combination to the head. Margarito’s right eye was swollen grotesquely, beginning in the fourth. By the 10th round, the left eye was a slit, too.

Pacquiao was looking at referee Laurence Cole late in the fight, asking him to stop it. Pacquiao said he eased off in the 12th round. “I did my best,” Pacquiao said. “He’s strong. He’s a very tough fighter. I can’t believe [he took those punches].”

Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, added, “We didn’t lose a round. I wish they had stopped the fight. They probably ruined his career by not stopping the fight.”

The final place at the 2011 Rugby World Cup is up for grabs when Uruguay
host Romania in Montevideo in the first leg of two qualifying play off
matches. The second leg takes place in two weeks time in Bucharest with
the winners destined to join Argentina, England, Scotland and Georgia in
Pool B when the finals kick off in New Zealand in September 2011.
Romania qualified for the play off by beating Tunisia 56-13 in July, whilst
Uruguay despatched Kazakhstan 44-7.
The two sides have only previously played each other twice in test matches,
both times in the IRB Nations Cup in Bucharest. Romania won on each
occasion, winning 10-6 in 2008 and 17-11 in 2009 when Uruguay finished
bottom of the six team tournament.
Romania are 19th on the IRB World Rankings and just two places above
Uruguay, who could climb up to 20th above Namibia if they win the match
by a margin of more than 15 points this weekend.
Uruguay reached the semi finals of the South American Championships
earlier this year following victories over Brazil, Paraguay and the host
nation, Chile, before losing 38-0 to the eventual winners, Argentina. They
then competed in the Churchill Cup in the United States, losing all three
matches to Canada, France A and Russia, who beat them 38-19 in the Bowl
Final.
Romania won six and drew one of their Rugby World Cup qualifying
matches in 2010 and finished third in the European Nations Cup behind
Georgia and Russia. They competed in the IRB Nations Cup on home soil
and finished second behind Namibia, who beat them 21-17 in their opening
match of the tournament. Romania recovered from that setback to beat
Argentina Jaguars and Italy A in their other two matches.
Romania have competed in the final stages of all six Rugby World Cup
tournaments, whilst Uruguay missed out in 2007 after qualifying for
the previous two in 1999 and 2003. Uruguay won one match at each
tournament, beating Spain and Georgia respectively. Romania have won
five and lost 15 during the final stages and the only time they lost all three
pool matches was in 1995 in South Africa when they finished bottom of a
group including the host nation, Australia and Canada.
Potential milestones
Uruguay need 39 points to reach 4,000 in test matches.
Romania’s DAN DUMBRAVA needs two more penalty goals to reach 50 in
test matches and 26 more points to become the third player to reach 300
for his country after Petre Mitu and Ionut Tofan.
The man in the middle
MARK LAWRENCE of South Africa will be in charge of this match, which
will be the first time he has refereed a game involving either side. His most
recent appointment was to New Zealand’s 23-22 win over Australia in the
final game of the 2010 Tri-Nations series and he was involved as a touch
judge and television match official at the 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cup
finals.

South Africa play Wales this weekend in the second game of their five match
tour following a narrow 23-21 success over Ireland in Dublin that surprised
many pundits given a lengthy injury list and the fact that the Springboks had
only flown into the country two days before the game.
That success has kept up the pressure on Australia in second position in the
IRB World Rankings and South Africa could move above them if they beat
Wales on Saturday and the Wallabies lose away to England.
Since the start of the new millennium South Africa have been the least
successful of the Tri-Nations sides when touring Europe at this time of year,
with 14 wins and 13 defeats. Their most successful tour was in 2008 when
they remained undefeated, beating Wales and Scotland before inflicting
England to their biggest ever defeat at Twickenham, winning 42-6.
The Springboks have now won 14 out of 17 matches played against northern
hemisphere opposition under Head Coach, PETER De VILLIERS. The three
defeats came against the British and Irish Lions in 2009 when South Africa
had already won the series and against France and Ireland on last year’s
European tour.
South Africa’s record against Wales is particularly impressive, having only
been beaten once in 24 matches, with 13 wins out of 15 on Welsh soil.
Wales’ solitary success over the Springboks came in June 1999, when they
won 29-19 in Cardiff and since that defeat South Africa have won the last 11
meetings between the two sides.
Wales lost 25-16 to Australia last weekend in a match that marked MARTYN
WILLIAMS 100th test appearance and have now only won two of their last
eight test matches, against Scotland and Italy in this year’s Six Nations
Championship.
Wales are currently in ninth position in the IRB World Rankings and
have climbed one place since WARREN GATLAND became Head Coach
in November 2007, winning 16 out of 30 test matches played under his
leadership, a success rate of 53%. This compares with 18 wins, two draws
and 20 defeats (45% success) from November 2004 up to the date of his
appointment. Wales have only won one out of 10 matches played against
Tri-Nations opponents under Gatland, beating Australia 21-18 at the
Millennium Stadium in November 2008.
If Wales win on Saturday they could climb to eighth place in the rankings
above Argentina if the Pumas lose away to Italy. The Welsh will have to be
careful not to concede too many penalties in kickable positions if they are to
have any chance of beating South Africa, who have this year’s leading points
scorer in the Tri-Nations in fly half MORNE STEYN, who amassed 77 points
during that tournament despite the Springboks winning only one game as
they finished bottom. Steyn missed his first kick at goal in 42 attempts during
the win over Ireland last weekend and is averaging over 14 points per test
match in 2010.

The USA play the first of two tests on their European tour at Lisbon on Sat-
urday afternoon against Portugal, with a non-test match against Scotland A
next weekend followed by a test against Georgia at the end of the month.
Portugal will face Namibia and Canada over the next two weeks.
The two sides have only met once before, when the United States won 61-5
in Lisbon in 1998 with right wing Vaea Anitoni scoring four of their nine
tries. Anitoni is the leading try scorer in USA test match history with 26 tries
and that was the second time he scored four tries in a test match after do-
ing the same against Japan in a 74-5 win in July 1996.
Portugal are currently 22nd in the IRB World Rankings but could move up
a place if they win this weekend and Uruguay fail to win their Rugby World
Cup play off match at home to Romania.
The USA are 15th in the rankings and cannot move up with a win but they
will drop a place below Tonga if they lose to Portugal on Saturday.
The Eagles have won five out of eight matches played since EDDIE
O’SULLIVAN took over as Head Coach in March 2009 and have moved up
four places in the IRB World Rankings under his stewardship as well as
qualifying for the 2011 Rugby World Cup after beating Uruguay at home
and away in November 2009, helped by three tries from left wing KEVIN
SWIRYN.
This will be the first test match Portugal have played under new Head
Coach ERROL BRAIN, who replaced TOMAZ MORAIS in September. Brain is
a former New Zealand Maori captain who has coached in Japan and at club
level in his native country.

New Zealand travel north on the second leg of their four match tour of the
UK and Ireland with a visit to Murrayfield to take on Scotland following last
weekend’s 26-16 win over England in a match that saw DAN CARTER become
only the fourth player in test match history to kick 200 penalty goals.
The All Blacks are still over five points clear of Australia at the top of the IRB
World Rankings, whilst Scotland, who currently lie in seventh place, would
move up to fifth if they win on Saturday combined with England losing at
home to Australia and Ireland failing to beat Samoa. If Scotland lose to New
Zealand and Argentina win in Italy, the Pumas would move above Scotland
into seventh place.
New Zealand have never lost to Scotland in test match internationals in 27
games played between the two countries. The nearest Scotland have come to
achieving a victory over the All Blacks was in 1983 when Peter Dods narrowly
missed a touchline conversion to win a match that finished tied at 25 points
apiece. The only other time Scotland have avoided defeat against New
Zealand was in 1963 when the two sides played out a 0-0 draw, which was
the last international match played without a single point being scored.
New Zealand’s last defeat in a tour match in Europe during November came
in 2002 at Twickenham, when England won 31-28. Since that defeat and a
20-20 draw against France the following week, the All Blacks have won the
last 21 internationals played in Europe on their November tours, including
two victories over Scotland in 2005 and 2008 when they scored 61 points and
conceded just 16.
The All Blacks have now won 41 out of 43 matches played against northern
hemisphere opposition under Head Coach, GRAHAM HENRY, with the only
two defeats coming against France in the 2007 Rugby World Cup quarter
finals in Cardiff and in Dunedin in June 2009.
Scotland have won five, drawn one and lost four under Head Coach ANDY
ROBINSON and come into this match on the back of three consecutive away
victories over Ireland and Argentina, who they beat twice on tour in June.
Since Robinson took charge in June 2009 Scotland have moved up two
places in the IRB World Rankings and climbed three places on the back of
those consecutive away wins.
This will be Scotland’s first test match since their tour to Argentina, with
further internationals against South Africa and Samoa to follow later this
month at Murrayfield.
Potential milestones
The All Blacks need 12 points to become the first country to score 12,000 in
international test match rugby.
Scotland need to score nine points to reach 300 in test matches against New
Zealand, whilst the All Blacks require 24 points to reach 800 against the Scots.
DAN CARTER is closing in on Jonny Wilkinson’s record as the all time leading
points scorer in test match rugby. He is now on 1,143 points, which is just 35
behind Wilkinson.
Carter also needs three more conversions to become the first player to reach
200 in test matches.
RICHIE McCAW and MILS MULIAINA will both equal Sean Fitzpatrick’s record
of 92 test match caps for the All Blacks if they play this weekend.
McCaw will also equal John Eales of Australia in fifth place for the most
appearances as a captain if he leads out his team against Scotland on
Saturday.
New Zealand have scored at least one try in their last 81 internationals, a run
going back to August 2004 when they lost 23-18 to Australia with six penalty
goals kicked.

Samoa face a trip to Dublin this weekend to take on Ireland following a
13-10 win over Japan in Tokyo on the first leg of their four test match tour.
That match was played in heavy rain and strong winds brought about by
Typhoon Chaba and the Samoans came from 10 points down at half time to
win the game thanks to a try by KAHN FOTUALI’I and eight points from the
boot of LOLO LUI.
Ireland lost the first of their four November test matches against touring
sides last weekend when they were beaten 23-21 by South Africa, who
won in Dublin for the first time since November 2000. That match marked
RONAN O’GARA’s 100th test for Ireland after he came off the replacements
bench in the last quarter of the match with Ireland 23-9 behind. His intro-
duction sparked an Irish revival with two late tries but O’Gara’s touchline
conversion to level the scores hit the woodwork and South Africa held on
for victory.
This will only be the fifth time that Ireland and Samoa have met in test
matches, with Samoa’s only victory coming in Dublin in November 1996,
when they won 40-25. Samoa have played nine matches on tour in Europe
since the start of the century and their only win came in November 2001,
when they beat Italy 13-9 in L’Aquila. They lost all three matches on tour last
November to Wales, France and Italy.
Ireland’s defeat to South Africa saw them drop a place to sixth in the IRB
World Rankings below England but they would regain fifth place if they
beat Samoa and England lose to Australia. If France also lost at home to Fiji,
Ireland would move up to fourth place in the rankings.
If Ireland lose to Samoa they could drop up to three places in the rankings,
with Scotland, Argentina and Wales all able to pass them with victories over
New Zealand, Italy and South Africa respectively.
Samoa moved up one place to 11th in the rankings following their win
over Japan and victory over Ireland on Saturday would see them move
up a place into the top 10 if Fiji lose to France. The Samoans could also
drop a place in the rankings if they lose to Ireland and Italy win at home to
Argentina.
Since DECLAN KIDNEY took over as Head Coach in 2008, Ireland have won
14 matches, drawn one and lost six. They have now lost their last four, in-
cluding defeats to New Zealand and Australia on tour in June and Ireland’s
last win was a 27-12 victory over Wales in the Six Nations Championship in
March.
Samoa’s Head Coach, TITIMAEA TAFUA, was appointed in February 2009.
Since then Samoa have won seven and lost five, with the highlight coming
in winning the 2010 ANZ Pacific Nations Cup by beating Fiji 31-9 in Apia in
the deciding match of the tournament.
Potential milestones
Ireland need six more penalty goals to reach 800 in test match history.
BRIAN O’DRISCOLL will become the most capped centre in test history on
Saturday when starting his 104th test match for Ireland in that position,
overtaking Philippe Sella’s previous record for France. He will also join Sella
on 111 test match caps overall, including six appearances for the British and
