The own goal club (New)

(FIFA,com) Friday 29 October 2010

Judging by the inevitable expressions of anguish on the faces of the guilty parties, putting the ball in the wrong net is one of the cruellest fates that can befall a professional footballer. Often spectacular, sometimes heavy in consequence and usually amusing, own goals are nonetheless an integral part of the game and have coloured its history since the very beginning.

The first goal scored in an official fixture was struck by a player from the wrong team, in fact, when Aston Villa defender Gershom Cox gifted Wolverhampton Wanderers the lead on 8 September 1888. Since that day, thousands of unfortunate souls have followed in his footsteps, and FIFA.com now brings some of the more memorable examples.

Villa villains
Cox’s effort must have set the tone for Aston Villa because the Birmingham outfit have been plagued by own goals ever since. They also boast the first player to have registered two in the same game in Chris Nicoll, who wrote himself a page in the history books with that particular feat against Leicester City on 20 March 1976. Incredibly, he also fired a pair of strikes at the right end, hitting all four goals in a 2-2 draw.

Richard Dunne has never scored two in one match but the Irish defender set a record all of his own on 23 October this year when his contribution condemned Villa to a 1-0 loss away against Sunderland. That took him on to a total of eight career own goals, more than any other player has managed in the English game. "Forget it," was the advice of his manager Gerard Houllier. "These things happen in football."

Peter Enckelman no doubt spun himself a similar line after entering legend with his role in a fiercely contested derby match against Birmingham City in 2002. What set his own goal apart from most was that it came from a throw-in. The Villa goalkeeper somehow failed to gather the ball from Olof Mellberg and could only watch as it rolled into his net.

Doubles and a hat-trick
Second behind Dunne in the standings, Jamie Carragher can also lay claim to one of the oddest own goals ever buried. During a game against city neighbours Everton, the Liverpool centre-back turned the clock back to his childhood days as a Toffees fan by finding the net for the blue half of Merseyside – from the penalty spot. In his defence, the match was the former England international’s testimonial.

Indeed, plenty more was at stake when Carragher’s inopportune double handed Liverpool’s other great rivals Manchester United the points during a 3-2 league reverse in 1999. He and Nicoll are not alone in having experienced this agony twice in 90 minutes either, with Mainz defender Nikolce Noveski needing just three to score his pair during a 2-2 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt on 19 November 2005. As for Tunisian international Karim Haggui, he struck two of an incredible three own goals managed by Hannover when they succumbed to Borussia Monchengladbach last season.

The 2009/10 campaign also contained a lowlight for Eskisehirspor midfielder Emre Toraman, whose double sealed a 2-1 victory for eventual champions Bursaspor. Georgia captain Kakha Kaladze equalled that in a 2010 FIFA World Cup™ qualifier against Italy, helping the nation where he spent nine years secure a 2-0 success. But no one can match the hat-trick exploit of Stan Van Den Buijs, who consigned Germinal Ekeren to a 3-2 defeat against Anderlecht in 1995/96.

Blunders and beauties
Quality can appeal as much as quantity, of course, and there was certainly something special about Jose Marin’s effort on 23 May 1976. Images of the Cruz Azul goalkeeper scooping the ball into his own net with his hand as he attempted to find a team-mate were seen around the world and have long since entered football folklore. That fate could lie in store for Chris Brass too after he put his astonishing stamp on a match between Bury and Darlington on 22 April 2006. Intending to clear the ball, Brass succeeded only in kicking it against his face and sending it goalwards. Not only did he put through his own net, the hapless defender also ended the game with a broken nose.

Other players have perfected the art of the beautiful own goal, with Helmut Winklhofer becoming the first to pick up Goal of the Month honours for his take on the phenomenon. His long-range strike into the top corner when Uerdingen took on Bayern Munich in 1987 was truly a worthy winner, and perhaps inspired Franck Queudrue to find the net from 35 metres out when his Lens side tackled Bastia in 2001.

Facundo Quiroga weighed in with an equally stunning own goal during a 3-3 draw between Argentinian outfits Racing Club and River Plate in 2008, the River defender beating his own goalkeeper courtesy of an acrobatic overhead kick. In a similar vein, Vitor Hugo put his name on the scoresheet by registering via his backside in an encounter between Brazilian sides Santo Andre and Portuguesa, while Jamie Pollock’s sumptuous flick and lobbed header from 25 April 1998 need to be seen to be believed. To make things worse, the Manchester City defender’s exquisite effort relegated his team to the third division and saved opponents Queens Park Rangers from the drop.

Decisive efforts
As Pollock found, no matter how unfortunate an own goal may be, it can sometimes prove extremely costly. John Arne Riise would no doubt attest to that too after his last-minute error for Liverpool in a UEFA Champions League semi-final against Chelsea. Paul Robinson’s failure to connect with a Gary Neville back pass as it bobbled over a divot also came laden with repercussions, helping Croatia down England 2-0 before pipping the Three Lions to a place at UEFA EURO 2008.

The own goal has provided many twists and turns on football’s grandest stage as well, with Switzerland’s Ernst Lotscher the first player to conjure one in FIFA World Cup play when his team faced Germany at France 1938. His most recent successor is Felipe Melo, who became the first Brazilian to deceive his own keeper in 97 FIFA World Cup outings when he helped the Netherlands to victory at South Africa 2010 – although that goal was later awarded to Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder. Infinitely more tragically, Colombia’s Andres Escobar was killed after returning home from USA 1994, where he had found the net for the hosts.

Lastly, a special mention has to go to the 1994 Caribbean Cup encounter between Grenada and Barbados. As the two sides geared up for what was their final group game, Barbados knew that they needed to win by at least two clear goals to top the section and advance. Crucially, they also knew that, under tournament regulations, a drawn match would continue into extra time under the golden-goal rule, with that goal counting double.

Three minutes from the end, Barbados held a 2-1 lead and decided to boost their chances by registering a deliberate own goal. That hardly suited their opponents, however, who could afford to lose by only one goal if they wanted to seal first place. Grenada spent the next two minutes desperate to register at either end but proved incapable, and it was Barbados who fired the crucial golden goal in extra time. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the organisers promptly changed the rules.

My Team Or Pakistani Cricket Team?

Shahid Afridi

He came. He went. He ate a cricket ball. He came back. He retired again. Has there ever been a cricketer who lurched after the limelight as much as Afridi? His last Test - if indeed it is his last Test - was memorable for the kind of ill-disciplined cameos he has become famous for. Your team does not have enough discipline to hang around, so why not mow your fourth ball to deep midwicket. What a leader.

South Africa picked up where they left off in the week's Twenty20 Internationals, while Pakistan continued their same, sorry run of results with a dismal eight-wicket loss in Friday's first ODI in Abu Dhabi.

Again triumphing in the flip of the coin and again opting to bat first, Shahid Afridi's decision to take advantage of the docile track on offer at Sheikh Zayed Stadium seemed it would pay off as Mohammad Hafeez (68) and the returning Younis Khan (54) added 114 runs for the second wicket.

Employing a greater deal of measure than that witnessed across Pakistan's rash batting throughout the year, the duo saw to seamers Charl Langeveldt, Morne Morkel and Jacques Kallis with relative ease.

Lonwabo Tsotsobe, however, was a much tougher prospect for the half-centurions, bowling superbly across a spell which has surely cemented his name in the Proteas' World Cup squad. The southpaw seamer, employing immaculate line and length and a plethora of sly slower balls, initially created the pressure for spinner Johan Botha (two for 40) to pounce on before racing to career-best figures.

While Botha started the rot in removing Hafeez and Khan in relatively quick succession, Tsotsobe well and truly set the skids under the 'hosts' by getting rid of middle-order frailties Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq to reduce them to 173 for six.

With his four for 27 in the bag, Tsotsobe happily let Morkel and Langeveldt get in on the remainder of scalps as Pakistan's characteristic collapsed came to a halt at 203 all out in 49 overs.

Although Afridi, yet again, was the master of his own demise in throwing his wicket away far too prematurely, his thoughtless approach didn't typify Pakistan's overall batting this time around. Instead, it was the visiting attack that well and truly undid their opposition. Benefiting from the absence of the average Albie Morkel and happy to let Rusty Theron wait in the wings on the back of seamer Kallis' comeback, all is well in the bowling ranks in the build-up to next year's ODI showpiece on the sub-continent.

South Africa's modest chase was made all the more easy by a predictably workmanlike and typically quickfire half-centuries from Kallis and AB de Villiers respectively.

Staving off cramps, which eventually had the beating of him, and the earlier loss of Hashim Amla (35) and Graeme Smith (19), who had to retire hurt after copping a couple of short balls from Shoaib Akhtar to the left hand, Kallis reminded the squad's young guns that the stalwart's stay on the big stage is by no means over.

Indeed, Friday's 66 retired hurt came at a rather pedestrian rate - 88 balls -but, given the need to test his fitness after a long injury lay-off, time out in the middle came as more of a premium than runs at a screaming rate.

Afridi's quest for quick wickets in the face of a below-par score was never forthcoming and, with his and fellow spinner Saeed Ajmal's overs spent and Shoaib Akhtar off the boil, JP Duminy (10 not out) and Colin Ingram (12 not out) had no trouble at all in wrapping up proceedings with all of 10.3 overs to spare to take the Smith's posse to their 10th consecutive ODI victory.

European Leagues 2010 preview

(FIFA,com) Friday 29 October 2010

With around a quarter of the season already gone in Europe’s five major domestic championships, a picture of how the season may pan out is beginning to emerge. The situation could become clearer still after this weekend's action, which includes the meeting of first and second in Germany, and that of leaders against reigning champions in France.

Across the border in Spain, Real Madrid face a serious test in the shape of Hercules, the only side to get the better of Barcelona thus far. In England, Tottenham Hotspur fans should find out against Manchester United if their team has what it takes to go the distance, as will supporters of the side that emerges victorious from the crucial AC Milan-Juventus clash in Italy.

Premier League: Spurs face Old Trafford test
The only unbeaten team left in England’s top flight, third-placed Manchester United will doubtless be forced to work hard to maintain that record against a Tottenham side that would leapfrog their more illustrious opponents in the event of victory.

United will be without the injured Wayne Rooney, but should be able to count on an on-song Javier Hernandez and former Spurs forward Dimitar Berbatov. The Red Devils will be keen to avoid losing ground to leaders Chelsea, who travel north to take on Blackburn Rovers, and second-placed Arsenal, who welcome bottom club West Ham to the Emirates.

Manchester City will need to put last week’s heavy defeat to the Gunners behind them as they, minus the injured Carlos Tevez, make the trip to lowly Wolverhampton Wanderers. Meanwhile, Liverpool, sitting third from bottom, hope to prove to their travelling support at Bolton Wanderers on Sunday that a recovery is finally underway.

Lastly, due to their current positions in the mid-to-upper reaches of the table, the stakes will be even higher than usual during the two derbies on the agenda, Aston Villa-Birmingham City and Newcastle United-Sunderland.

The question: Aston Villa approach the Birmingham derby comforted by the knowledge that they have overcome their city rivals on the last six occasions. Can Gerard Houllier’s charges make it seven in a row?
The big game: Manchester United-Tottenham Hotspur, Saturday 18.30 CET, Old Trafford
The quote: “We’ll head to Newcastle with the aim of maintaining the good form we’ve shown up to now – we’re not treating the match any differently. But if our fans can go home happy at the end of the day, that would be fantastic,” Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole.

La Liga: Hercules seek unlikely double
Real Madrid, a point clear at the top and still to taste defeat this season, will be more wary than usual of their upcoming trip to Alicante to face promoted side Hercules. The reason for this is simple: the team currently in 13th spot is the only one to have beaten champions Barcelona, a result achieved away at Camp Nou for good measure.

Since that reverse, the form of the third-placed Catalans has improved, and they will view the visit of Sevilla as an ideal opportunity to keep their good run going. The Andalusian side have shown recent signs of recovery, however, with Luis Fabiano and Frederic Kanoute looking especially dangerous during last week’s win over Athletic Bilbao.

Sandwiched in second between the two Spanish giants, Villarreal cannot afford to drop points versus Sporting Gijon. High-flying Valencia’s mission at home to winless Zaragoza is identical, as is that of fifth-placed Espanyol in Galicia against a struggling Deportivo side.

The question: Atletico Madrid front man Diego Forlan has not found the net in the league since 11 September. Can he rediscover his scoring touch against Almeria on Sunday?
The big game: Barcelona-Sevilla, Saturday 22.00 CET, Camp Nou
The quote: “Most people are wondering how Villarreal can possibly be splitting Real and Barcelona at the moment. We know that we’re not on the same level as either of those teams on paper, but let’s see where we are at the end of the season. For now, let’s concentrate on the Gijon match,” Villarreal skipper Marcos Senna.

Serie A: Tough at the top
Lazio, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus all have awkward-looking encounters to negotiate this weekend. The Rome-based side will be intent on consolidating top spot away to seventh-placed Palermo, in a match that could take on a certain South American flavour, as Javier Pastore, the Sicilian side’s Argentinian star, and Hernanes, Lazio’s Brazilian midfielder, are both likely to play influential roles.

Defending champions Inter, meanwhile, lock horns with an ambitious but inconsistent Genoa outfit. AC Milan, lying second, would normally be confident of picking up solid wins at home while their city rivals play away, but their opponents this time around will have different ideas. Juventus, who sit fifth, would like nothing better than to continue their steady improvement by pocketing all three points at the San Siro.

Chievo, whose good recent form has seen the Verona side climb to fourth, travel to Parma, languishing at the bottom of the league. Roma and Fiorentina, still incapable of putting together a good run of results, face mid-table opposition in the form of Lecce and Catania respectively.

The question: On the end of two resounding 3-0 defeats last year, can Juventus gain some revenge against AC Milan in this season’s first meeting between the sides?
The big game: AC Milan-Juventus, Saturday 20.45 CET, San Siro
The quote: “We’re set to take on a top team, but we’ll still be aiming to pick up three important points. We’ve been working on making sure everything falls into place. There’s no reason why that can’t happen against Inter,” Genoa forward Mattia Destro, on loan from Inter Milan.

Bundesliga: All eyes on Mainz meeting
Punters would have got long odds on Mainz and Dortmund running away with the German Championship at this stage of the season. Having started the campaign with a remarkable seven consecutive wins, the Rhineland side regained top spot last week following Die Schwarzgelben’s draw at home to Hoffenheim.

Aside from the battle for three points, the match will have a particularly poignant aura for Borussia supremo Jurgen Klopp, who enjoys legendary status in Mainz, having previously played for and coached the club with distinction.

Below the leading pair, a substantial six-point gap now extends down to Hannover in third, who could well create a divide of their own should they manage to come away from fourth-placed Hoffenheim with a win. In the meantime, Bayern Munich’s players once again have no choice other than to emerge triumphant from their encounter with Freiburg if they are to retain any realistic hopes of securing the league title.

The disappointing starts suffered by Schalke and Stuttgart have all but ruled them out of the championship race, but victories over Leverkusen and Wolfsburg would go a long way to resolving their more immediate concern, that of avoiding relegation to the second tier.

The question: Freiburg’s predatory forward Papiss Cisse has scored as many goals (eight) on his own as the entire Bayern team. Will he be able to notch another one at the Allianz Arena on Friday night?
The big game: Mainz-Dortmund, Sunday 15.30 CET, Stadion am Bruchweg
The quote: “At the moment, teams in the league are just not afraid of Bayern. We need to get back to a point where our opponents dread playing us,” Bayern midfielder Thomas Muller.

Ligue 1: Aspiring leaders lie in wait
Marseille, reigning champions and currently occupying second position, welcome surprise table-toppers Rennes; a win for L’OM would see them replace the Breton team at the summit. The omens are certainly good for Didier Deschamps’ men, as it was against the same opponents that they captured the French title at the end of last season.

Further back, third-placed Brest face a Saint-Etienne side sitting just below them in the table. Both clubs will be acutely aware that a win coupled with a draw in the Marseille-Rennes clash would propel them to the very top of Ligue 1. Making up the leading six clubs, Toulouse and Montpellier also entertain hopes of leapfrogging their way up the table, a goal that could become a reality with respective victories over Paris Saint-Germain and Lens.

Lyon, still struggling to clamber free of the bottom half, will seek to put their midweek French League Cup elimination behind them by taking care of midtable Sochaux at Stade Gerland, while Bordeaux will look to do the same away to a Monaco outfit desperate to exit the drop zone. Finally, Lille need to bounce back at Valenciennes, following two successive losses.

The question: Brest goalkeeper Steeve Elana has not conceded a goal for 701 minutes. Up against Dimitri Payet, top scorer in Ligue 1 with eight goals, can he continue this impressive streak?
The big game: Marseille-Rennes, Saturday 21.00 CET, Stade Velodrome
The quote: “During the last two seasons, we’ve tended to dominate matches and then get caught on the break. Valenciennes are particularly good at that kind of counter-attacking game. On Sunday, we need to show that we’ve learned our lesson,” Lille midfielder Rio Mavuba.

Elsewhere
With seven matchdays gone in the Israeli Premier League, two teams, namely unexpected early leaders Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona and third-placed Maccabi Haifa, still boast unbeaten records. Both have tough away assignments this weekend, with respective journeys to Hapoel Acre and Hapoel Petah Tikva on the agenda. Maccabi Tel Aviv, third on goal difference, will head north to cross swords with Hapoel Haifa.

Surprise leaders Viktoria Plzen continue to take the Czech Liga by storm, and will look to at least maintain their nine-point advantage at the top by beating fourth-placed Teplice at home. Nearest challengers Sigma Olomouc cannot afford any slip-ups at Hradec Kralove, while Sparta Prague must see off Bohemians to remain in touch.

The 2010 Asian Games, also known as the XVI Asiad, are scheduled to take place in Guangzhou, China from November 12 to November 27, 2010. Guangzhou is the second city in China to host the Games after Beijing in 1990. A total of 476 events in 42 sports will be contested by athletes, making it the largest event in history of the Games. It will also be the last one to have presented such big events, as the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) have enforced new hosting rules for future games, beginning with the 2014 Games.

In Doha, Qatar on July 1, 2004, Guangzhou was awarded the right to host the Games. This decision came after several other cities withdrew, with their own reasons. Seoul withdrew after considering the short span of time between 2002 and 2010, because South Korea hosted the Games, eight years before, back in 2002 in Busan.[2] Kuala Lumpur were forced to withdrew their bid, after it was boycotted by the cabinet, due to the high cost of hosting the Games, leaving Guangzhou as the sole bidder.

Marketing The 2010 Asian Games’ official emblem was unveiled at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall on November 26, 2006. It is a stylized goat, which, in Chinese tradition, is a blessing and brings people luck. It is also a representative symbol of the host city Guangzhou, which is called the “City of Rams” or “City of the Five Rams

he mascot design is based on a legend about five immortals who took five rams to Guangzhou, each holding an ear of corn in its mouth. There, the immortals prayed for an end to famine, then flew into the sky as the five rams turned into fossils.

Dominant Proteas crush Pakistan

News by cricket365,com

A lacklustre batting display by Pakistan in combination with a polished South African performance saw the Proteas ease to a six-wicket win in the first Twenty20 International in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistan were always going to be short of runs after being bowled out for 119 as Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Johan Botha contributed three wickets apiece and, despite a early flutter in the chase, JP Duminy and Colin Ingram were on hand to see South Africa home to a comfortable victory.

On a decent batting surface Shahid Afridi won the toss and elected to set a total, with Johan Botha not too unhappy about bowling first with dew predicted to become a factor later in the evening.

The Pakistan innings got off to a very positive start thanks largely to Albie Morkel, who battled for control of the new ball, bowling four wides in conceding 14 runs from the opening over.

That horror 10-ball over gave Pakistan the early momentum but they were quickly pegged back by the impressive Tsotsobe (three for 16), who accounted for both Imran Farhat and Shahzaib Hasan in his opening burst.

With the run-rate dropping skipper Botha (three for 31) brought himself into the attack in the eigth over. The wily off-spinner made an immediate impact, accounting for Mohammad Hafeez, who, like so many of his fellow Pakistan batsmen, was guilty of hitting aerially straight down the throat of a Proteas fielder.

Enter Afridi, to the great delight of the Abu Dhabi crowd, who had clearly come specifically to see 'Boom Boom' with bat in hand. He didn't disappoint either, clubbing his very first delivery from Botha over long-on for six.

While the 'host' captain and the talented Umar Akmal were at the crease Pakistan were dangerous and very much in the running for a large total.

Two cleanly timed sixes in succession from Afridi then had the ground rocking, with the Pakistan captain intent on taking the attack to his opposite number. Botha, however, held his nerve and, tossing the next delivery up a little wider, had the last laugh, with Afridi skying to Tsotsobe.

The wicket was a massive blow and the rest of the Pakistan order crumbled in disappointing fashion, with no partnerships to speak of. Misbah-ul-Haq ended unbeaten for the home side on 27 but never looked comfortable at the crease in his return to international action as his side ended all out one ball short of their full allotment.

While the Pakistan batting display was well below par, the South Africans were professional with the ball and in the field. JP Duminy was responsible for a stunning catch over his right shoulder while on the run and David Miller struck with two direct-hits to bag himself a couple of run-outs.

In pursuit of the very modest target it looked to be plain sailing for South Africa as Saeed Ajmal allowed a ball to go through his legs for four in the first over of the innings.

However, a double strike from the flame thrower, Shoaib Ahktar, shortly afterwards sent a flutter throught the South African camp. Loots Bosman hit straight to point before AB de Villiers played on for a rare duck three balls later. Graeme Smith was next out as he backed away and was bowled by Mohammad Hafeez and, with South Africa at 18 for three, Pakistan suddenly had their tails up.

With the pressure on and some nervous looking faces on the Proteas bench, Colin Ingram joined Duminy in the middle and the two left-handers showed great composure as they crafted their way to a stand of 66, dealing with the guile of Ajmal and the pace of Akhtar and Umar Gul.

Duminy reached 41 before he fell to Ajmal but by then the game had been won and a cameo from David Miller along with a couple of confident blows from Ingram, who ended unbeaten on 46, saw South Africa home with 10 balls to spare.

The Proteas will be delighted with their performance, having jetted in to the UAE just the day before, while Pakistan will have to improve on their batting effort if they are to turn things around in the second Twenty20 International at the same venue on Wednesday.

Delivery of the Day
Pakistan gifted a number of their wickets away but Abdul Razzaq's was not one of those. The Pakistan all-rounder went to play with the turn from off-spinner Botha and was totally bamboozled by a delivery which pitched and straightened to take out his off-stump.

Shot of the Day
With South Africa needing 17 runs from the last three overs Afridi brought back his trump card, Akhtar, for one final fling. Ingram was in no mood to just see out the paceman's final over and instead went on the offensive, picking a slower ball and audaciously going down on one leg to power Akhtar over deep square-leg for six.

Defining Moment of the Day
Afridi is a huge crowd pleaser and is determined to play his way, and that is to swing hard at everything. However, one can't help but wonder how destructive he could be were he to stay at the crease a little longer by way of some choice shot selection.

The Pakistan captain had collected three sixes and a four in his 25, off just six balls, when he decided to launch into a third consecutive six off Botha. It proved a shot too many for Afridi when a nudge for one would have kept him at the crease alongside Akmal, with plenty of time to build a large total.

Hernandez the hero for United again

(PA) Tuesday 26 October 2010

Manchester United's new hero Javier Hernandez took the plaudits again to keep the Red Devils' hopes of a third consecutive League Cup alive with a 3-2 third-round win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

United were twice pegged back in the second half - George Elokobi cancelling out Bebe's deflected opener and Kevin Foley levelling after Park Ji-sung's strike. However, with extra-time approaching, Hernandez came off the bench to secure victory for the hosts and send United through to the quarter-finals.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson lavished praise on Hernandez after a victory which keeps the English giants on course for a third successive League Cup.

"We tend to build up heroes very quickly here but the boy's justifying the praise at the moment," Ferguson said. "He's such a great professional, the kid.

"He's first in, last out at the training ground every day. His goalscoring is getting him a lot of credit and quite rightly. When he came on you just knew that if he got a chance he'd take it."

Mauro Boselli finally started to pay off his £6million transfer fee as Wigan Athletic joined United in the quarter-final draw with a 2-0 defeat of Swansea. The Argentinian striker claimed his first goal since his summer move from Estudiantes as Wigan manager Roberto Martinez secured victory over his former club at the DW Stadium.

Cedric van der Gun should have given the Championship visitors an early lead but Boselli gave Wigan a 51st-minute advantage and Ben Watson added a late penalty.

Leicester City goalkeeper Conrad Logan gifted West Bromwich Albion their place in the hat with a clanger that swung the game firmly in the visitors' direction. The sides were locked at 1-1 after a Simon Cox strike for Albion and a Nicky Shorey own-goal, when Logan spilled the ball at Somen Tchoyi's feet to leave the hosts behind again. Steven Reid and Cox, with a second, added the gloss on a 4-1 win.

Roy Keane's Ipswich Town came from a goal behind to end Northampton Town's brave run in the competition. The Cobblers - who famously dumped Liverpool out in the previous round - came into the clash at Portman Road languishing in 91st place in the Football League ladder yet looked set for another shock when Liam Davis put them ahead early on.

But goals from Carlos Edwards and Damien Delaney soon had the Championship side in front and Keane's men turned in a professional second-half display to seal their progress with Tamas Priskin adding a late third.

Birmingham needed penalties to overcome League One Brentford following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

The Bees looked to have followed up their victory over Everton with success at St. Andrew's through Sam Wood's 15 yard drive mid-way through the second half.

But veteran striker Kevin Phillips broke their hearts in the 92nd minute with the equaliser and Blues keeper Maik Taylor made the decisive save to deny Bees defender Craig Woodman from the spot as they edged the shootout 4-3.

Spain break Brazilian domination

(FIFA,com) Tuesday 26 October 2010

Two years after losing out to the hosts in the final of the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008, Spain exacted a measure of revenge by beating the South Americans in their back yard to win the sixth Grand Prix de Futsal last weekend.

Organised every year by the Brazilian Futsal Confederation, this prestigious event brings together the world’s top 16 nations and has been won on the previous five occasions by A Seleção. Not only did La Roja’s 2-1 win in the final in Anapolis end Brazil’s domination of the competition, it was also the first defeat the men in yellow and green had suffered in 163 matches, their last reverse also coming against the Spanish five years ago.

“This was what we came here for,” said a triumphant Spain captain Kike, one of six Spanish survivors of that fateful world final defeat to the Brazilians in Rio in 2008. “What makes it even better was that it was a fantastic match in front of a full house, which just goes to show how strong this team is. We deserved the win.”

Ortiz, another survivor of Brazil 2008 and the scorer of three Grand Prix goals, including one in the final, played down any talk of revenge: “That’s not the way we’re looking at it. It was very special because we missed out two years ago and we really wanted to get back to the summit.”

The Europeans were in mightily impressive form throughout the competition, winning all six of their games, scoring 35 goals and conceding only nine, the lowest total in the tournament along with the hosts. Top-scoring for Spain with six goals was their 21-year-old target Aicardo, just one of the exciting youngsters drafted into the team by coach Venancio Lopez. “Getting the better of the Brazilians is never easy and even less so in their own country, which is the cradle of futsal,” commented the Spain supremo afterwards. “Beating such a good team makes this even more satisfying for us.”

Food for thought
Despite losing their grip on the trophy and suffering a first loss in five years, the Brazilians tried to accentuate the positive. “I think we started the job of winning the last World Cup when we lost to Spain in 2005,” explained the ageless Falcao, who scored four goals to move to within one of the 300 mark. “That was when we began to open our eyes and take a closer look at our opponents. We’ve still got two years ahead of us and we can improve. We’ll be looking to turn this situation around in 2012 or at next year’s Grand Prix even.”

Aside from the final, Falcao and Co won all their games, amassing 30 goals and letting in just nine. Yet despite those impressive stats, the home side endured a scare or two, edging out Libya 2-1 in the group phase and only overcoming Paraguay 5-3 in a semi-final that proved much tighter than expected.

Even so, as goalkeeper Tiago explained, the four-time world champions are not about to hit the panic button. “We’ve learned a little bit more about them and about our shortcomings. Now’s the time for us to start looking forward and to work towards qualifying for the next World Cup as well as we can.”

The rest of the field
Having reached the last eight at Brazil 2008, Paraguay confirmed their progress by overcoming Iran 5-3 in the match for third place. Los Guaraníes semi-final defeat to Brazil was their only setback of the competition, and in Yiyi they boasted the tournament’s second-highest scorer with eight goals. “Our technique showed through and we managed to stay fresh. We’re delighted,” said the 25-year-old central defender.

Iran’s fourth-place finish provided proof of their improvement, the Asian representatives having missed out on a semi-final slot at the last FIFA Futsal World Cup on goal difference. As well making the Spanish sweat before going down 6-4 in an epic semi, Team Melli relegated Brazil 2008 semi-finalists Italy and Russia to the minor placings.

While the Italians can take some consolation from at least reaching the quarter-finals, where they went out to Brazil, the Russians were unable to advance beyond the group stage. The only positive note of a dismal Grand Prix for the eastern Europeans was provided by their naturalised Brazilian Pula, who hit 11 goals to finish the competition as top scorer, repeating the feat he achieved at Brazil 2008.

Final
Brazil 1-2 Spain

3rd place
Paraguay 5-3 Iran

Fifth place
Italy 3-0 Portugal

Seventh place
Czech Republic 1-2 Argentina

Ninth place
Libya 0-2 Russia

Eleventh place
Costa Rica 1-3 Guatemala

Thirteenth place
The Netherlands 3-1 Romania

Madrid flounder in Copa

News by fifa,com

Real Madrid were held to a goalless draw at lowly Real Murcia in the Copa Del Rey tonight as their free-scoring form from the weekend deserted them.

A Madrid team featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos and Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria off the bench, failed to find a way past their third-division opponents in the first leg of their fourth-round clash.

Murcia goalkeeper Dani Hernandez made a succession of saves to frustrate Jose Mourinho's men, who hammered Racing Santander 6-1 at the Bernabeu in the Primera Division on Saturday with Ronaldo scoring four times.

It was still, though, a far less embarrassing result than the 4-0 first-leg defeat Madrid suffered to Alcorcon at the same stage of the competition last season. Murcia will visit the Spanish capital for the second leg on 10 November.

Barcelona fared rather better than their bitter rivals as they won 2-0 away to third division Ceuta. Maxwell opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Pedro doubled their lead 10 minutes later to give the Catalans a comfortable advantage heading into the second leg at the Nou Camp.

An immediate test of FC København's ability to remain as leaders of Group D comes with their visit to FC Barcelona on Matchday 3. Victory would enable the Catalan club to overtake their Danish visitors.

• Barcelona began with a bang as Lionel Messi inspired them to a 5-1 victory against Panathinaikos FC on Matchday 1, scoring twice and making two others as Josep Guardiola's side roared back from a goal down.

• On Matchday 2, Barça found themselves checked again by FC Rubin Kazan who last season took four points from them. Only David Villa's second-half penalty rescued a 1-1 draw and a point.

• København began their second UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-0 home win against Rubin. They left it late however, three minutes remaining when Dame N'Doye headed the only goal.

• N'Doye was on target again two weeks later on his return to Panathinaikos, where he spent the 2007/08 season. He fired FCK ahead in the 28th minute with Martin Vingaard adding a second from a free-kick nine minutes later.

Previous meetings
• As if the prospect of facing the 2009 champions on their own soil is not daunting enough, FCK also have to reverse the trend of history if they are to maintain their unbeaten run. In six European fixtures against teams from Denmark, Barcelona have won five and drawn the other. Their only previous Danish UEFA Champions League opponents were Brøndby IF, a team they beat 2-0 both home and away in the 1998/99 group stage.

• København's results against Spanish opposition are virtually the polar opposite: in six games they have lost three and drawn three. Their last visit to that country, to face Valencia CF in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage, ended 1-1.

Match background
• Barcelona won five out of six home games last season although their last, a 1-0 defeat of FC Internazionale Milano in the semi-final second leg, proved insufficient to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit.

• The Spanish side have won their group in each of the last three seasons and qualified for the knockout rounds eight times in the last nine campaigns. The sole exception was 2003/04, when they were not involved in the competition.

• København were previously involved in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League when they finished bottom of Group F with seven points. They lost all three away games: 1-0 at Celtic FC, 3-0 at Manchester United FC and 3-1 at SL Benfica.

• FCK reached this stage with an away-goals triumph in the play-offs against Rosenborg BK, following a 2-1 defeat in Norway with a 1-0 win at the Parken Stadion. In the third qualifying round they drew 0-0 at FC BATE Borisov, winning 3-2 in the Danish capital.

Team ties
• Spain faced Denmark twice on the road to UEFA EURO 2008 qualification, Villa scoring the decisive goal in their 2-1 win in Madrid on 24 March 2007. Andrés Iniesta, Xavi Hernández and Jesper Grønkjær also played in the fixture.

• Grønkjær made 16 appearances for Club Atlético de Madrid in 2005.

Sir Alex Ferguson is optimistic Manchester United FC can put Saturday's disappointing home draw behind them as they look to take strengthen their position in Group C with victory against Bursaspor. Injury to Wayne Rooney and discussion over the striker's future dominated the build-up although visiting coach Ertuğrul Sağlam backed his side to continue improving in their first UEFA Champions League campaign.

Sir Alex Ferguson
, Manchester United manager
Bursaspor have lost their first two games, it's their first time in Champions League which is not easy and so, given our home record, we'd expect to put the match to bed tomorrow. We'll make changes, using one or two younger players who need experience, but that doesn't mean we're going to be taking it lightly. The way Rangers [FC] set themselves out [in a goalless draw on Matchday 1] it would have been difficult anyway.

We're disappointed about Saturday [a 2-2 home draw with West Brom], we've now thrown eight points away this season after losing leads at the end of games. We've got to try and put it behind us, find remedies and move on to the next game. We missed some good opportunities again on Saturday but that doesn't mean [the profligacy] will last forever. Our goals scored ratio is not too bad, it's the ones we're letting in that concerns us.

I can't understand why [Wayne Rooney] would want to leave this club, so can't give you a reason. We can all speculate if we want but it won't matter: the player wants to leave. We now have to handle the next phase of that situation.

Ertuğrul Sağlam, Bursaspor coach
It's always hard to play Manchester United, especially at Old Trafford. That said, it's also one of the best places in the world to play.

It's true that after our league championship win last year we didn't have a lot of funds to strengthen our squad, though we still managed well last season even without having a huge squad. We're still very competitive and we work well together as a team.

Of course in football anything is possible, and if you believe in yourself you can achieve anything. We feel we're improving – as we showed against Rangers – and that we've room for even more improvement and will keep performing even better in the Champions League.

Team news
ManchesterUnited
Rooney will miss the match having suffered an ankle injury in training on Tuesday. Jonny Evans (hip) and Michael Owen (hamstring) are also out. Seemingly recovered from a hamstring problem, Ryan Giggs started the 2-2 draw at home to West Brom on Saturday, but was withdrawn before half-time. Antonio Valencia will miss "a good portion of the season" after dislocating and fracturing his left ankle against Rangers.

Bursaspor
Ivan Ergić returned to face Kardemir Karabükspor having missed their previous league game after suffering a head injury. İbrahim Öztürk also played after shaking off a calf problem.

Weekend results
16/10/10 United 2-2 West Bromwich Albion FC
(Hernández 5, Nani 25; Evra 50og, Tchoyi 55)
United failed to win at home for the first time in the Premier League this season, an Edwin van der Sar error presenting the visitors with their equaliser. Javier Hernández scored his first goal in the Premier League, his third in four matches for club and country.

15/10/10 Bursaspor 2-2 Kardemir Karabükspor
(Turgay 10 23; Cernat 13pen 34)
Turgay Bahadır's first goals of the season were not enough to prevent a second successive draw for Bursaspor amid heavy rainfall at the Bursa Atatürk Stadium. Having conceded a solitary goal in their first eight league outings this term, Bursaspor shipped two in 21 minutes on Friday

FC Internazionale Milano moved clear at the top of UEFA Champions League Group A after surviving an unlikely late rally from ten-man Tottenham Hotspur FC.

The Nerazzurri were in control from the outset, Javier Zanetti shooting them ahead in the second minute and Samuel Eto'o doubling the lead from the penalty spot after visiting goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes had been sent off. Dejan Stanković made it three on 14 minutes and Tottenham looked set for a heavy defeat when Eto'o further stretched the lead before the break. Instead Gareth Bale's hat-trick made for an exciting finale, although Inter held on to strengthen their grip on the section.

Tottenham got off to the worst possible start when Zanetti struck after barely a minute had passed. The Inter captain began the move deep in his own half, picking out Coutinho and haring onto Eto'o's angled pass. Making his 83rd UEFA Champions League appearance, the 37-year-old then curled past Gomes to become the oldest scorer in the competition's history with only his second effort at this level.

Six minutes later, matters worsened for the visitors when Jonathan Biabiany was put clear by Wesley Sneijder's sweeping pass from deep. The Frenchman was too quick for the advancing Gomes who felled the winger, earning himself a red card and conceding a penalty that Eto'o stroked past Carlo Cudicini.

The substitute could do little about the third goal that soon followed either as a rampant Inter ruthlessly exploited their shell-shocked opponents' defence. Stanković played a deft one-two with Eto'o before firing in from the edge of the area.

The goalkeeper did deny Stanković and made a fine double save from Maicon, while Tottenham's only noteworthy first-half chance was a free header for Peter Crouch that cleared the crossbar. Eto'o was not so profligate and, when Coutinho played him in down the left, he slipped his sixth goal of the group stage under Cudicini.

The travelling fans were finally rewarded for their raucous support by Bale's superb individual goal on 52 minutes. The Welshman raced forward from midway inside his own half and rifled a low shot across Júlio César.

Though they were largely concerned with damage limitation, Cudicini saving well from Davide Santon, there was a sting in Tottenham's tail. With 90 minutes played, Bale surged down the left again to beat César with a near copy of his first goal. Virtually from the kick-off, Aaron Lennon skipped through before squaring for the 21-year-old to complete a remarkable hat-trick that may not have been enough on the night but gives his side heart for the return on Matchday 4.
